hi, i'm megan ura.

How I keep up with the latest tech news

Inspired by Ian Anderson Gray’s blog post “How to Stay on top of the Latest Social Media & Tech News” I decided to organize and write up how I follow the news, and recommend some of my favorite sources. I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time because I’m frequently asked how I have time to “know so much about tech stuff”. While you may not need to follow the news as voraciously as I try to do, you’ll likely find it valuable to have a general idea of what’s going on in tech no matter your industry. With the tools I use, I can kick back and catch up as long as I like, or just dip in quickly if I have a few minutes on my phone while I’m killing time in a line somewhere or stuck in traffic. Not all of these are tech-related, but I just like to recommend to everyone.

How I do it:

Subscribe to blogs: Google Reader
Recommended Sites: Techmeme, ReadWriteWeb, Mashable, The Verge, Digital Photography School, A List Apart (for web folks), Copyblogger (for writing), ProBlogger, SEOmoz, ProfHacker, Wired Campus

Audio and video that’s perfect for the gym or a long commute: Podcasts
I use Apple’s “Podcasts” app (which is terrible) and SoundCloud for subscribing to podcasts. I always thought of SoundCloud just as a music service, but with great podcasts there and a mobile app, it’s worth trying out.

Recommended Podcasts: Anything from the TWiT network (I watch TWiT, The Social Hour, iFive for the iPhone, and Mac Break Weekly), and GrammarGirl (to improve my writing).
Audio podcasts on SoundCloud: Lifehacker, CNN, TheNextWeb Daily Dose, BBC World Service Radio, ArsTechnica

Digestible bits of news on the go: Social networks
I use Twitter, Tumblr and Google+ for following my techie interests and sharing resources I find.

YouTube Channels: ChannelTechSmith (for screencasters), Google, GoogleWebmasterHelp, pbsideachannel (just for the awesomeness of it)

How do you follow tech news, or news happening in your industry? Any resources you’d recommend I follow?
