Whoa. The MLA has officially devised a standard format to cite tweets in an academic paper. Sign of the times.

I remember seeing Tweet citation on the MLA website a while back (having directed students to it). Glad to see it finalized and promoted!

Twitter testing ‘like’ and ‘star’ instead of ‘favorite’ with a limited set of users

I prefer they stick with the term “favorite,” but if they have to change it, I like “star” over “like” any day! Keep “likes” on Facebook, please.

The Beginner's Guide to Twitter

This Mashable link got a lot of love yesterday, for good reason: it’s a great up-to-date one pager on basic Twitter features, perfect for sharing.

I hope this article is the beginning of an overhaul of Mashable’s Twitter Guide Book!

Twitter usage among young adults is one of the few areas where there have been significant changes lately. Since May 2011, daily usage of Twitter among those 18 to 24 increased from 9% to 20%, a trend the Pew report attributes to the increasing popularity of smartphones among this group. Smartphone users, after all, are far more likely to use Twitter daily than those with feature phones (13% vs. 3%).

Pew: 8% Of U.S. Online Adults Now Use Twitter Daily | TechCrunch

Everyone called this one: once young people figured out how convenient and useful Twitter is on mobile, usage rates would go up, and so it has. This is especially interesting to me in the context of Twitter’s usefulness in worldwide protests and Occupy Wall Street, even going back to the big RNC protests in 2008. This study, like many others, also point out the popularity of Twitter among US minorities.
